NOT IN VAIN

{By the grace of God, I am what I am. And His work in me was not in vain.}

1 Corinthians 15:10

Time and time again this year I came back to this verse and reread what I had written beside it. I started to jot a few of these thoughts down last July, without understanding the meaning or weight they would soon hold as the months went on. I had no idea the work that God was about to start in my life this year, that just about every aspect of my life would change in one way or another–some changes were incredible, some inevitable and some I am still coming to terms with. I knew I needed to write about it, more than anything, as a reminder to myself– that God’s work in us is for a purpose, even when we can’t see the end result. And though it is painful, He is refining us and working things out in our hearts.

The past year I’ve seen and felt the chaos and heartache that has always been here in Haiti but God has gave me a new heart and attitude to work through those things, to sit at the table with the injustice of the world and walk away with my spirit intact. … To believe that there is beauty beneath the chaos To remember, though slow and steady, progress IS being made and when you quiet your soul, you hear the voice of Jesus leading you onward.

This is our ever constant hope: that through the trials, HE is doing new work and that we are being prepared for something beyond our wildest dreams. It’s that hope we cling to on the nights when life is too much to handle and the tears won’t stop flowing. Maybe it’s not that what we struggle with in life goes away, but that God gives us the strength and grace to deal with them differently, to not be overcome by how much we’re lacking, but to be overwhelmed by how much HE is doing on our behalf.

We don’t get to pick our seasons in life. Many times if given the choice, I’m sure we would try and choose differently for ourselves. But the best news is God never leaves us in the valley. He continues to grow and stretch us and walk alongside us. Even when our legs are weary and our hearts our tired, He is there to lighten the load.

Keep going, keep going, keep going.

HE is doing a great work in you,

And it is not in vain.
